Spring Maintenance for Your Home

March 1, 2021

The snow is slowly melting and before we know it daffodils will be coming up and spring will officially be here. Along with sunny days and warmer weather, spring also brings a list of tasks to get your home ready for the upcoming season.

Check the Exterior – The harsh winters are tough on homes. Once the snow has melted, it is time to walk around your home and inspect for damage. Be sure to look at siding and trim, roof and chimney, decks, porches, and concrete walkways and patios. The high winds, sub-zero temperatures, and freeze and thaw cycles of winter can all wreak havoc on building materials. Inspection can be done from the ground. If you suspect you have a problem with something high up, like the roof, it is best to hire a professional to check and correct the problem.

Clean Gutters & Downspouts – Speaking of hiring a professional…spring is a great time to have your gutters and downspouts cleaned out. Before the “April showers” start, it is a good idea to remove any debris that may have collected over the winter. Clogged gutters can make standing water accumulate and give way to roof damage. Downspouts that are clogged can cause water to drain into the basement, flooding, cracked foundation, and a host of other problems.

Clean Windows – Spring clean your windows inside and out. Using a store-bought cleaner or a homemade solution of one-part distilled vinegar and ten-parts warm water along with a soft, lint-free cloth will give you a clear view. Using a squeegee and wiping it dry as you go, will also give you a cleaner, streak-free window. Screens can be cleaned with a mild detergent and water. While you are cleaning, check caulking and weather stripping for any damage.

Clean Mudroom & Entryways – Winter is messy, and dirt and salt have made their way into your home over the season. Now is the time to do a deep clean of your mudroom and entrances. Thoroughly clean the floors, wipe down walls and doors and get rid of any clutter that has accumulated. Rugs and doormats should be cleaned or changed out for a more seasonal version.

Freshen Your Décor – Time to shed the heavy fabrics and winter layers. Bright spring colors and lighter fabrics can make your home feel fresh and airy. Put away the winter throw pillows and blankets. Change out heavy rugs for more flatweave and lightweight fabrics or consider having bare floors. Of course, adding fresh flowers will give your home an immediate spring feeling.
